What I stopped saying to my kids
Переглядів 1,8 тис.3 місяці тому
It hit me one day that i didn’t like a certain phrase I kept saying to my kids, so I made a small, but important adjustment. Let’s always prioritize mental health. We can empower our kids to know they can accomplish things independently, while still reminding them that needing help does not mean they’re inadequate or weak. Luka wrote in his chapter of our book how he shut down, pushed people aw...

Today is the day. This book is as personal and vulnerable as it gets. Thankful for my son’s input along the way, and for writing the last chapter. I really wanted readers to hear directly from him. Thank you to everyone who chooses to read it. My wish for this book is that it will bring hope and remove shame. #mentalhealth

Kaj te briga kaj drugi misle. Pogotovo oni koji to nemaju. Jedno je kljukati sina sa lijekovima a drugio dati mu lijekove od kojih može normalno funkcionirati.

I'm not a doctor and this is just my opinion. I think it's a disservice to refer to it as "mental" illness. The mental parts of the illness are symptoms. There is a physical cause, the chemical imbalance. If we referred to it by it's cause, maybe people would be more understanding or at least less inclined to say..."snap out of it."

Tired of the ignorance and even more tired of the stigma! That said, I do think there is too much of a culture of medicating people and sending them on their way instead of giving them therapy, or better housing, or helping support them through whatever difficulties life has thrown. Medication can _help_ with that, but medication on its own is often what's offered. I have Complex PTSD, for context. I have been in therapy for 3 years (after finally finding the right therapist) and the improvements are amazing. I'm also part of my local mental health community where, with all our different diagnoses, we never judge - just support one another: medicated, unmedicated, coping, thriving, or suicidal. It's meant such a lot to me. You are a beautiful human being doing what you were put on this earth to do - please don't take these ridiculous armchair experts seriously. Sending lots of love from across the Pond

I have struggled with major depressive disorder for over 15 years. I have lost so much respect for several, now formerly close, family members and friends. It is incredibly discouraging and behind painful. My 85 year old mother, has understood and advocated for people with mental illness since the early 1970s and was the primary person who convinced me to seek professional help when back when I was floundering just to survive. Humans can really suck sometimes….don’t be that person.

Problem is, my generation grew up with parents who had very old fashioned views of mental health and saw it as being committed to a mental hospital. They also have this "get over it" attitude. That seems to be a problem even today, people just say "get over it" and regard people with mental health issues as "weak".

Most of the people who are dismissive of my MH issues are “health nuts” born in the 80s and 90s who believe I can exercise and take vitamins to cure MDD 🤔.

Yes. I've been tired of the ignorance for years. Being called weak, lazy, stupid. Like, the brain is the only organ that doesn't get to be treated like an organ. A heart can have a defect or a disease, and this is treated with care and compassion. When it's the brain, it's considered a moral failing. Even, in some cases, by the professionals who are trained to treat it! It's so idiotic. Thank you for speaking out against mental health stigma.

I'm so glad you said this. For some people, it's really necessary and makes a big difference. Take the meds if you need them. Times have changed, demands are different, and we don't have a lot of the societal norms that hold us together.

We still get sh*t from EVERYONE, even family when we pulled our son out of 6th grade bc of intense bullying that his school did nothing about... Plus he was dealing with undiagnosed (at the time) ADHD , losing everything I'm a house fire including our fur baby .... It was soooo bad he couldn't sleep unless I said I'd think about keeping him home, puking every morning.... So we pulled him out, got in cyber school, started counseling and medication.... BEST DECISION we ever made.... 5 years later, he is soooo much happier, still sees his counselor and we found medications that work.... His mental well being, health and happiness means more to me than anything!!! I will not lose my child bc of others opinions and stigmas!!!!!
